A trash pile is when various forms of trash or garbage have been left out on the ground, without it having been placed in a garbage can or trash compactor yet.

Among the many ways to generate trash are:
- Tell a Sim to take out the trash in the trash compactor to their town service frontyard trash can, but interrupt the action while the Sim is walking to the can.
- Rummage someone else's lot's Outdoor Trashcan.
- If a witch attempts the Restoration Ritual but backfires.[TS3:SN]
- Having an Evil Mr. Gnome[TS3:S] on the lot will have him spawn a trash pile roughly every few days.
- Occasionally spawns on resort lots that the active household owns.[TS3:IP]
- Doing the Dystopian Future initiation questline, which allows (and requires) Sims to throw trash behind their shoulders and to laugh about it.[TS3:ITF]
- Spawns on some places in Oasis Landing's Dystopian Future,[TS3:ITF] except in the Wasteland district.
Usually, the trash will end up as various boxes and cartons on the ground and will drag down the room's Environment value dramatically. In the event of trash can rummaging, the trash will instead end up in the Sim's inventory and give them the Disgusted -10 moodlet (It is not entirely clear why rummaging Sims would steal and stuff trash into their inventories).
In the event of trash in the inventory, they cannot be sold or removed directly from the inventory, and the Sim must instead dispose of it at a trash can.
Toad Sims[TS3:SN] can eat the flies that fly above the piles.

Occasionally, especially when rummaging Outdoor Trashcans, piles of trash may instead be rendered as gardening trash like more-or-less dead leaves and sticks, and an unspecified small bag.

These also spawn randomly in Oasis Landing's Dystopian Future (both on and outside of lots), but with entirely different functionality.
Sims can choose to:
- Rummage
- Jump in Trash
- Play in Trash
- Clean with Nanites (Option only shows up if the Sim has at least one Nanite in their inventory)
Although it would have made sense if repeatedly doing trash pile actions would've given the Stinky +20 moodlet and access to litter-related interactions that most Dystopian Future locals have, this does not actually seem to be the case. This leaves the Dystopian Future without a known "Become like the locals" method, in contrast to the Utopian Future's 50% chance of becoming like the locals with Rainbow Dew.
They look faintly similar to, but should not be mistaken for, junk piles.[TS3:A]

The fish spawner for Three Eyed Fish almost always adds a floating trash heap when going back to Live Mode. The trash cannot be cleaned up or interacted with through any means; fishing onto it will result in catching a fish (Normally either a Three Eyed Fish, a Lobster, an Alley Catfish, or a treasure chest) instead of any of the trash.
The Sims 4[]
Trash piles return in The Sims 4, with the added trait that if a trash pile is left on soil for too long, it will become a trash plant. Such plants will smell rather foul, but Sims don't seem to mind eating its harvested fruits.
Angry Sims will occasionally have a wish to "Stomp in a Trash Pile".
