A toilet is an object used by children and older Sims to relieve their bladder need. Toilets are available in buy mode in the Plumbing and Bathroom section. There will usually be a relatively cheap model and an expensive model, and in The Sims and The Sims 2, the expensive model will also raise comfort for Sims who sit on it. In addition, there will usually be at least one model of toilet stall for use on community lots, as well as a urinal which can only be used by males. Toilets may occasionally break and become clogged, creating a watery mess.

The Sims

Toilets in The Sims can be cleaned after each use, and will become visibly dirty if they are not cleaned after several uses. Toilets will also clog if they are not flushed after several uses; when a toilet is clogged, Sims will not be able to use it, and an adult must be directed to unclog the toilet. Alternatively, Sims can hire a repairman to unclog the toilet. Neat Sims may flush the toilet after they use it, although messy Sims will need to be manually directed to flush.

Male Sims will stand to use the toilet if their bladder motive is not too low, while female Sims and Sims with a low bladder motive will always sit on the toilet to use it.

A child will always sit on the toilet even if it's a male child however male children can use a urinal.

On Vacation Island, Sims will shower and use the toilet in front of any Sim regardless of relationship. This is most likely due to most campgrounds and bare bones lots having communal bathrooms that are not gender or age restricted. Players can make communal bathrooms gender restricted for either males or females but this won't stop opposite sex service Sims or mascots such as Maid Marrion or Marky Sharky from entering the bathroom to clean or entertain. Vacationer Sims do not use showers. Sims will shower, bathe or use the toilet in their hotel rooms without caring about privacy.

This was originally an official download made to recognize the popularity of The Sims: House Party. Its contents were included in Hot Date and all later expansion packs.

The Sims: Superstar

The Sims: Superstar introduced a star trailer, in which Sims in the fame career who have at least 2 stars could use. The star trailer restores both comfort and bladder motives, though Sims who have less than two stars will be kicked out.

The Sims 2

Toilets function similarly to those in The Sims. Sims who are pregnant or otherwise ill may throw up in toilets, which will dirty it immediately. Only teens and older can unclog a clogged toilet; Sims with a higher mechanical skill can unclog it more quickly. Players can also instantly unclog a toilet by enabling the testing cheats and shift-clicking on the toilet. If The Sims 2: Pets is installed, cats can be trained to use toilets.

All toilets have a fun rating of 2, which applies when toddlers play in them. Toddlers may splash the water out of a toilet, which can create a mess.

If a toilet in the same room as a shower is flushed, the Sim in the shower will scream from the changing water temperature, a common comedic trope. The showering Sim may later lecture the Sim that flushed the toilet.

The Sims 3

Toilets in The Sims 3 can be upgraded to be self-cleaning or unbreakable, where they will never clog. Toilets can clog even if they are flushed regularly, and cheaper toilets will clog more often. Sims can still use toilets that are clogged, but flushing them will cause the toilet to overflow, creating puddles. Unclogging toilets builds the handiness skill. A Sim may sit on a toilet without using it, if there are no other seating on the lot.

Male children, and female Sims whatsoever, cannot use urinals. Mummies, PlantSims, and Plumbots generally don't need to use toilets nor urinals at all.

The Sims 4

Much like The Sims 3, toilets in The Sims 4 can upgraded to be equipped with a bidet (increase hygiene gain rate), have superior flush (reduce breakage rate) or be self-cleaning. Unlike previous games, children cannot clean toilets and the toilets themselves cannot be used if they are broken. Some toilets remain functional when a lot is off-the-grid. Every toilet has a bladder score of 10.

Get Together, Jungle Adventure, Snowy Escape and Werewolves include bushes that Sims can use as toilets, nap in, and WooHoo in. They also do not violate privacy. However, using these bushes tend to make Sims very uncomfortable. Discover University and High School Years include toilet stalls which do not violate privacy, but players who do not own these packs can build their own using tall half walls. City Living includes two robotic toilets ("Talking John" and "Potty Mouth 2.0") which Sims can speak to — this will build their charisma skill.

The base game and a few packs also include small public bathrooms that can be placed anywhere, and are present in many worlds' public spaces. Some are hidden from the catalog unless the bb.showhiddenobjects cheat is used.

• The Flush Force 5 XLT is available from More Awesome Than You! as custom content for The Sims 2. It is available in a version for the base game through Open for Business, and one for Pets and later. The Pets+ version can be used by cats, and will flush after a cat uses it.
• In The Sims and The Sims 3, urinals can also be placed on residential lots. This isn't possible in The Sims 2.
• In The Sims 2 the toilet will splash when zooming in from a distance.
• In The Sims, toilets (except for urinals) require cleaning after each use, though they do not become visibly dirty. Even so, cleaning NPCs such as the maid and community lot janitors will be drawn to clean them, as may very neat Sims.
  • This was changed in The Sims 2: even an extremely neat Sim will not have the "Clean" interaction unless a toilet has been used several times since it was last cleaned.
  • In The Sims, unflushed toilets could be cleaned without being flushed first. This was changed in The Sims 2: even very sloppy Sims will flush a toilet (if necessary) before cleaning it.
• Sims will usually shoo other Sims when a toilet is used. However, in The Sims and The Sims 2, they will not shoo other Sims they have a crush or love relationship with.
• The Sims and The Sims 4 are the only games to have no toilet stalls in the base game. The Sims got stalls in The Sims: Unleashed while The Sims 4 got stalls in The Sims 4: Discover University and The Sims 4: High School Years
• There is a bug in The Sims that sometimes doesn't let male adults or children use urinals. Clicking on the urinal will result in the There are no actions available notification displaying. This happens at completely random times and usually is fixed after a short period of time. This is more common with male children than male adults.
