There are several cheats in The Sims that can be used to aid in gameplay or to bypass certain game mechanics. Although the term "cheats" applies to all these codes, some of them allow a player to correct technical issues, access normally-hidden features, or otherwise make changes to their game without giving themself an unearned advantage. Thus a player can make use of some of these cheats without "cheating" at the game.

Cheat console

Cheats in The Sims are activated and deactivated through the cheat console box. When active, the cheat console appears in the upper left corner of the screen. The cheat console is opened or closed by holding down ^ Ctrl and ⇧ Shift and pressing C. The cheat can then be typed into the box and activated by pressing ↵ Enter. Cheats can be repeated by adding ;! after the code. Ending the code with ! will repeat the cheat indefinitely until the player either closes the cheat box or removes the semicolon.

Types of cheats

Cheats in The Sims can be roughly broken up into six different categories: building cheats, gameplay cheats, money cheats, neighborhood cheats, storytelling cheats, and miscellaneous cheats.

Building cheats

Grow_grass

Qualifications

There are no firm qualifications for receiving access to the rollback tool. However, the rollback tool is not intended to be given to new editors who are just starting out; only established users with a decent history of good-quality edits are eligible. Users are recommended to have at least 200 edits to The Sims Wiki, with a majority of those edits being in the main namespace of the wiki. Editors with a current or recent history of edit warring are disqualified, as are any users who previously requested the rollback tool but were denied and given a limit on re-requesting that hasn't expired yet.

Procedure for requests

• A user meeting the qualifications can request the rollback tool below. Users should explain why they want rollback and/or should point to past anti-vandalism work they've done in justifying why they should receive the tool.
• Once a request is submitted, a seven-day waiting period begins. Discussion is not strictly necessary, but any user can weigh in on the request, including by asking direct questions to the requesting user.
  • Users who are obviously unqualified may be declined even before the end of the seven-day period, and are not allowed to re-apply for at least one week.
• At the end of the waiting period, an active administrator will decide whether the applicant is qualified and whether the request is acceptable. The administrator that responds to the request should take any user input in the selection into account when deciding whether or not to grant access to the rollback tool. However, this decision is not strictly based on community consensus; the administrator may choose not to give rollback even if there is consensus in favor of approving the request.
  • If an administrator chooses to approve the request for rollback, that administrator will go to Special:UserRights and enable the 'rollback' flag for the requesting user. The administrator should post on the requesting user's talk page notifying them that their request has been approved and explain the rollback tool (including explaining the rules for when rollback can and cannot be used)
  • If an administrator chooses to decline the request, they should explain why on the request page as well as on the requesting user's talk page.

An administrator may remove access to the rollback tool immediately if there is evidence of severe and ongoing abuse of the tool, and may issue other sanctions up to or including a full wiki block if necessary. This power should be exercised only in limited circumstances where removal of rollback cannot wait for the conclusion of a discussion.

A user who has been stripped of the rollback tool may be restricted from re-requesting the tool by a consensus of the administrative team or by community consensus.

A user who has access to rollback may choose to voluntarily give up that access; see the retirement policy for more information on user rights retirement. This cheat's functions were later superseded by the addition of the grass tool to build mode.

However, lots with adjusted boundaries may not display correctly from the neighborhood view.

The Move_objects cheat allows the player to move or delete any object, anywhere on the lot. It can be used to delete objects that should not be deleted, such as the mailbox, carpool, or the portals which allow Sims and vehicles to enter and exit a lot. This cheat can be used to restore a Sim's motives, but doing this also resets the Sim's skills to their level at the last save; to prevent a loss of progress in building skills, players should save the game before deleting a Sim. Sims that are deleted with this cheat can be brought back by double-clicking on the Sim's portrait; they will then appear next to the mailbox.

Money cheats

Allows the player to move - or delete - any object anywhere on the lot. It can be used to fix some problems, such as "stuck stairs", but can cause problems if overused or misused. Therefore, it is best to be in Build mode when using this cheat to move or delete items, as Buy mode in The Sims does not have an Undo function, but Build mode does.
