The Sims Wiki's administrators have the ability to block users from editing in particular namespaces, editing specific pages, or from editing anywhere on the wiki. Blocks are typically issued for severe or repeated violations of wiki policies or FANDOM's Terms of Use (ToU). Blocking results in a complete loss of editing privileges for the affected area(s) or for the full wiki until the block expires.
Blocking[]
Blocks are issued as a last resort to stop rule-breaking, or to prevent future rules violations. Blocks may be issued at any time, but typically are issued after one or more warnings. A blocking administrator should always provide a justification for any block they give; this justification is usually written out in the block reason, which is shown on the block logs and is visible to a blocked user if they attempt to edit, but they may also notify the blocked user through their user talk page.
Partial vs sitewide blocks[]
Administrators can block users from editing in particular namespaces, or editing particular pages. This is known as a partial block. A user who is partially blocked can still edit other namespaces or pages which aren't affected by the block.
When a user is blocked from editing the entirety of the wiki, this is known as a sitewide block. A user who is given a sitewide block is usually, but not always, still allowed to edit their own talk page for the purposes of messaging the administrators or for requesting an unblock.
Block length[]
An administrator can issue a partial or sitewide block for any reasonable length of time. If a block has a set length, the block will automatically expire and be lifted when that period of time has elapsed, unless the block is canceled or extended. A blocked user will usually still have the ability to edit their own talk page, and will be eligible to request an unblock. However, unblock requests will generally not be considered in the case of short-term blocks (blocks lasting less than a week), so in those cases it is usually best to simply wait out the block rather than requesting an unblock. Talk page access, and the ability to request an unblock, may be revoked if the talk page access is abused.
Repeated or especially severe rules violations, or the potential of a compromised account, may result in an indefinite block against a user. Indefinite blocks have no specified end time, and therefore continue forever, unless the block is removed by an administrator. If an indefinitely blocked user is given talk page editing privileges, they are eligible to request an unblock. As with temporary blocks, indefinitely-blocked users who abuse their talk page access or the unblock process may have their talk page access revoked. Since indefinite blocks never expire on their own, indefinitely blocked users who have their talk page privileges revoked are permanently blocked from editing The Sims Wiki.
Unblocking[]
A user that has received a block may be allowed to request that the block be removed. If the block applies only to a namespace or a particular page, these blocks can be appealed through a thread on the The Sims Wiki:Administrators' noticeboard. In the case of a full wiki block, requests to be unblocked are handled through the blocked user's talk page.; to request a full-wiki unblock, the blocked user must add the following template to their talk page:
{{Unblock|1 = <Reason why the user should be unblocked>}}
The user should replace <Reason why the user should be unblocked> with their reasoning and rationale as to why the block on them should be lifted.
When a user adds this template to their talk page, the talk page is categorized into Category:Requests for unblock.
When requesting an unblock, an administrator will review the block; this review may include evaluating the reason given by the blocked user, reviewing the blocked user's contributions and deleted contributions, checking logs of the user's on-wiki activities, and consulting with other members of the administrative team. After this has concluded, an official decision will be posted as a response on the admin's noticeboard (for namespace or page blocks) or on the blocked user's talk page (for full-wiki blocks). Users who are unblocked may be placed on editing restrictions or have other measures taken to prevent repeat behavior, as determined by the unblocking administrator. Users who have their unblock request declined are allowed to re-request. However, frequently re-requesting, abusing the system, or vandalizing the wiki (including their own user talk page) may result in an increased-severity block or the loss of privileges to edit their talk page and to request an unblock for the duration of their block. After said privileges are lost, the only way to discuss the block with other administrators is via The Sims Wiki's IRC channel or Discord server.
After a block[]
Once a block expires, or once a block has been removed, a user may return to actively editing the namespace, page or wiki. A user that is no longer blocked is free to participate in the wiki as would any normal user, unless an administrator has applied special editing restrictions. Any warnings or block notices placed on the user's talk page may be removed by the user once the block has ended. Blocking is not intended as a punishment, and a user that is no longer blocked should be given the benefit of the doubt in edits they make to the wiki. However, a user that violates policies following the end of a block may receive a longer-duration or an indefinite block, especially if the user repeatedly violates the same rule(s) after multiple chances to fix their behavior.
