A science laboratory is a rabbit hole in The Sims 3 and a general name for the similar lot assignment: FutureSim Labs in The Sims 4: Get to Work and Secret Lab in The Sims 4: StrangerVille .
The Sims 3[]
This is where Sims can get a job in the Science Career, and can attend Logic, Gardening, Inventing,[TS3:A] Science[TS3:UL] and Scuba Diving[TS3:IP] skill classes. Sims can also tour the science lab. This is also one of the rabbit holes Sims can partner with and own in The Sims 3. It was both the most expensive but also the most profitable, prior to The Sims 3: University Life.
If a Sim is collecting insects they can sell them as specimens to the lab. Donating insects is slightly more rewarding than selling them through the inventory, so it is worth the trip.
Sims can WooHoo in these rabbit holes, but they might get caught by security and be asked to leave.
If a Sim gets the Oh My Ghost! opportunity, they can take a loved one's urn to the lab for testing and restore them as a playable ghost.
If Ambitions is installed, the firefighter profession has a special disaster, which is a Space-Time Rift, and Sims can join the Ghost Hunter profession at the science lab.
Aliens[TS3:S] can get a part-time job as an Alien Test Subject at the science lab, and they can also steal space rocks from the lab between 8 PM (20:00) and 6 AM.
Science labs generate the following red map tag in-game:

The Sims 4[]
The Sims 4: Get to Work[]
The science lab returns in The Sims 4: Get to Work as a special lot assignment named FutureSim Labs, accessible for Sims working in the scientist career. There exists the only science lab for work in the game, which is located in the Science Lab sub-neighborhood. The lot assignment is not available for other lots without mods.
The Sims 4: StrangerVille[]
In The Sims 4: StrangerVille, there is another science lab lot assignment named Secret Lab for adventure gameplay. It can be visited via the map and occupies a whole neighbourhood but without a neighbourhood info sign. This lot assignment is not available for other lots without mods as well.

The ██████ Lab carries the main storyline gameplay in StrangerVille. There are three above-ground levels, though only the ground floor is furnished and accessible, and there are three basement levels.
The ground floor of the lab looks hastily evacuated, with furniture in disarray and various clues strewn around for Sims to discover. There is a break room with a functional kitchen, in case Sims need to eat while investigating, as well as two small bathrooms. The lab has offices with computers, but they are all bricked, and require hacking to be used.
The lab is split into four areas, coinciding with the four acts of the pack's story. Each act unlocks a new area in the lab, which are set deeper and deeper underground. The lot's entry point is at the back, since the only open parts in the fence are there. And the Mother Plant resides in the third basement floor.
