A rug or carpet is a decorative object found throughout the core Sims series. They are typically placed on the ground to add additional style to lots.
In contrast to real life, Sims cannot feel comfort or clean their clothes with them, but they are nevertheless often found near doors and in living rooms. They can catch fire fairly easily, for instance (but not limited to) if they're placed close to a fireplace.
Carpets are also a very common flooring tile subcategory, though most of the info on this page does not apply to them.
In The Sims 2: Nightlife, child Sims can set up a static charge prank on rugs.
In The Sims 4, several rugs are given as career rewards, e.g. in the Military and Athletic careers.
Many expansion packs and object descriptions refer to red carpets, though those of them that do have red carpets treat them as regular carpets.
