A puddle is a special type of scenery that can occur across the Sims games by various means, and which has gameplay effects of its own.
Puddle spawning[]
Puddles can spawn by, for instance:
- A shower, toilet, sink, hot tub, or The Not So Routine Machine[Store] breaks.
- A Sim or pet has bladder motive failure.
- A gardening sprinkler is turned on.[TS2:S][TS3][TS4:S]
- Occasionally if a Soaked Sim walks indoors (especially if the Sim is a mummy[TS3:WA]).
- Bonehilda drinks a cup of juice, nectar, or water, which goes through her and onto the floor.[TS:MM][TS3:SN][TS4:PS]
- Sometimes when using a shower.[TS][TS2][TS4]
- Sometimes when using a bathtub.[TS][TS4]
- Throwing a water balloon at another Sim.[TS2:U]
- A dog gets out of a bathtub.[TS2:P]
- Hitting a water pipe while digging.[TS2:BV]
- A Good Witch Cat drinks too much tap water.[TS2:AL]
- A slob gets out of a shower.[TS3]
- Choosing "Accept" when the game prompts to start a lot challenge related to either leaky water pipes or ghosts.[TS3]
- ^ Ctrl+⇧ Shift-clicking on a Puddle/Burnt Tile Marker and choosing to create a puddle.[TS3:WA]
- A Sim is interrupted when carrying a pile of wet clothes from the washing machine to either a dryer or a clothesline, and puts the pile on the ground.[TS3:A][TS3:UL][TS3:TLS][TS4:LDS]
- A witch tries to cast a Restoration Ritual but it backfires.[TS3:SN]
- Sporadically when a Spectrum Mood Lamp is set to Blue.[TS3:SN]
- Sporadically spawned by an Evil Mr. Gnome.[TS3:S]
- The Grim Reaper buys a vending machine soda and drinks it, which goes through him and onto the floor.[TS3:UL]
- The ghost of a drowned Sim will create water puddles around them as they float around.[TS4]
- A ghost using the "Conjuror" power.[TS4:L&D]
Gameplay effects[]
- If a player Sim tries to repair an electric object while standing on a puddle, the Sim will near-instantly get electrocuted, resulting in instant death in The Sims, a drastic motive decline in The Sims 2 and 4, and in getting Singed in The Sims 3.
- The Environment score of the room or area will lower, the extent of it varying between games (In The Sims 3 the deduction is very small).
- A Sim who cleans up someone else's puddles can get furious at the Sim that created the puddle.[TS2:NL]
- In The Sims 3 the puddles will never go away on their own, so a Sim must clean the puddles with a brush.
- Flooring under a puddle cannot be removed in Build Mode.[TS3]
- A PlantSim[TS3:UL] can choose to "Absorb Fluid" to improve their Water motive a bit. Doing this also counts towards the TheSims3.com achievement "Sunlight and Water".
- In The Sims 4 outdoor water puddles will eventually disappear, but indoor ones won't.
- Sims with the neat trait are able to mop up puddles that are on natural ground.
- Angry and Playful can get Whims that involve puddles.[TS4]
Special variants[]
Chocolate puddle[]
Spawned when a Sim with low Cooking skill uses the Schokolade 890 Chocolate Manufacturing Facility.[TS2] Such puddles take longer to clean up than regular puddles.
Mud puddle[]
A child and a toddler playing in mud puddles in The Sims 4: Seasons.
Brown mud puddles form on exposed terrain when it rains in The Sims 4: Seasons. Sims may slip and fall in them (especially clumsy Sims), and they can also use them to have mud fights.
Oil puddle[]

If a Plumbot[TS3:ITF] with the Fear of Humans trait chip sees a human, they will often "wet" themselves and create an oil puddle on the floor.
Rain puddle[]
A rain puddle in The Sims 2: Seasons.
Primarily spawned by precipitation.[TS2:S][TS3:S][TS4:S] Sims can choose to splash around in those puddles, and the puddles will usually dry away on their own.
Yellow puddle[]
Unique to The Sims FreePlay, bladder motive failures will result in yellow puddles, whereas bladder motive failures in all other games produce regular clear puddles.
