A potty chair is an object used to relieve a toddler's bladder need. They can be used to potty-train toddlers, after which they will be able to use the potty chair on their own.
The Sims 2[]
Potty chairs in The Sims 2 need to be emptied after each use; toddlers can still autonomously use a full potty chair (if they have been fully potty trained), but older Sims cannot be directed to take a toddler to the potty chair until it has been emptied. Sims cleaning the potty chair will flush the contents down a toilet, or will throw it into the trash if a toilet is not available. Only teenagers and older can potty-train toddlers and empty the potty chair, and they can only do so when there is a toddler in the household.

The Sims 4[]
A potty chair that has not been cleaned will eventually cause nearby Sims to become uncomfortable. Toddlers with higher potty skills are more likely to use potty chairs independently. There are currently three potty chairs available in The Sims 4 base game, as well as a few more options that are added in content packs.

Bring it out of storage and keep your family tradition (or thrift it and keep some family's tradition) and get to the potty training. It may be a little old fashioned, but you know what they say: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
