A part-time job is a type of job available in The Sims 2, The Sims 3, and The Sims 4. Part-time jobs have shorter working hours, fewer levels within the career track, and usually offer lower pay than full jobs. A Sim cannot hold a part-time and a regular full-time job at the same time. Teens and elders can work part-time jobs in all three games, whereas young adults and adults can only work these jobs in The Sims 3 and The Sims 4.
In The Sims 2, teens are only eligible to work part-time jobs. Part-time jobs have hours that do not interfere with a teen's school schedule. Reaching the top of a part-time career track is a prerequisite to fulfilling the "Overachiever" want for teens. Teens cannot get a part-time job if their grades are poor (less than a C-).
Elders who are unemployed or retired are only eligible for part-time jobs; elders who hold a full-time career when aging into an elder will continue to work full-time until they leave their job or retire. Elder part-time jobs have the same advancement levels as teen part-time jobs.
Part-time jobs are not labeled as such. All career tracks (other than Natural Science, Artist, Show Business, and Paranormal[note 1]) have parallel part-time tracks which only go to level 3. When a teen or elder looks for a job through the newspaper or computer, only positions in the part-time tracks will be available. A teen in high school or an elder who has retired from a full-time job will have a second tab in the job panel, which will show the part-time job. Young adults can't have jobs with regular hours, but can work on campus as baristas and cafeteria workers. Downtown also offers part-time work as DJs and bartenders.[TS2:NL]
The Sims 3[]
In The Sims 3, Sims aged teen or older can take a part-time job. These jobs pay less per hour, but have fewer hours overall, so they are not as time-consuming as full-time jobs. All part-time jobs only have 3 levels, and Sims cannot retire from part-time jobs, so they will not receive pensions. Sims can apply directly at the work place for all part-time jobs. Performance options are limited to: Business As Usual (normal workday), Work Hard (more performance, but more stress), and Take It Easy (less performance, but less stress). Promotions are dependent only on mood. Sims employed in a part-time job will not receive any career opportunities.
Teens are only able to work part-time jobs; they cannot be employed in full-time jobs. Work schedules for teen Sims are set so that they do not interfere with their school schedule. Teens who participate in afterschool activities[TS3:G] are not able to get a part-time job that starts between 3 PM and 5 PM. They may only work as a Mausoleum Clerk.
