World | Willow Creek |
Mortimer Goth ( Listen /ˈmɒrtəmər ɡɑːθ/) is a pre-made, playable Sim that first appeared in The Sims. He is the son of Gunther and Cornelia Goth and was born outside of SimCity in the Old Country. He grew up at 13 Skyborough Boulevard, a large mansion in Sunset Valley, right next to the Pleasant Rest Graveyard and just down the road from his future wife, Bella. Later, the two fell in love, married and moved to 5 Sim Lane, where they had a daughter, Cassandra. Between The Sims and The Sims 2, Mortimer and Bella had one more child, Alexander, and moved to 165 Sim Lane in Pleasantview. Shortly before the start of The Sims 2, his wife Bella went missing, having been abducted by aliens, and hasn't yet returned.
In the alternate universe of The Sims 4, Mortimer lives at Ophelia Villa in Willow Creek, alongside his wife, Bella, his daughter, Cassandra, and his son, Alexander.
Biography[]
Life leading up to The Sims 3[]
In The Sims 3, Mortimer is a child (7 days to teen) who lives with his parents, Gunther and Cornelia Goth (née Crumplebottom). He doesn't know his aunt, Agnes Crumplebottom, very well. Mortimer Goth and Bella Bachelor are best friends. He is also friends with Michael Bachelor, Bella's brother. His traits are grumpy, ambitious and artistic, and he is a B+ student who likes to read and paint. He starts out with one point of logic skill. He is often angry or in a bad mood for no apparent reason, even more, so it seems, than his parents. This is probably due, at least in part, to his grumpy trait. He does however, seem to be able to grow out of this, as in The Sims and The Sims 2, he is described as "Cheerful and outgoing." Also, when he grows up, occasionally there is a bug where his thumbnail, portrait, and marker show himself as a kid. This is also shown in his relationship portrait and as icons for other Sims' wishes.
Life leading up to The Sims (console)[]
By The Sims (console), Mortimer wears a purple suit and black shoes with a black mustache. He lives with his wife Bella Goth and their daughter Cassandra Goth in 5 Sim Avenue. He shares a 95+ with his wife and a 20+ with his daughter. He works as a B-Movie Star in the entertainment career track. He likes to play chess, read books, water the plants and mourn at the tombstones. In other games, he works in the Science career, which he seems to stay in, until retirement age, with no memories of the Entertainment career. This is most likely a mistake by the developers.
Life leading up to The Sims[]
Mortimer Goth, his wife, Bella, and his daughter, Cassandra, are first introduced in The Sims. He and his family live in a rather small home on 5 Sim Lane. Mortimer has black hair, combed back with a widow's peak and a mustache. He wears a stylish black suit jacket with a purple vest.
According to his bio, he brings his Old Country upbringing into the modern age and has an unusual fondness for insects. This version of Mortimer appears to be quite young, as he's only a Test Subject, the first level in the science career track, starting out with no skills, and with quite a small amount of money. No mention of the entertainment career exists.
Life leading up to The Sims Bustin' Out[]
In The Sims Bustin' Out, he lives in Goth Manor. They have a ghost problem. Here, he talks as if he is a spooky butler. When he is not working as a virus breeder, he spends most of his time synthesizing music. Mortimer looks slightly older in this game. Cassandra is notably absent in this game, this may be because she went to college (though this is not certain). In the intro, Mortimer can also be seen playing air hockey with the Grim Reaper. The Grim Reaper also scores a goal which, can also be hinting at Mortimer's age, as his hair has turned grey.
There is a glitch where he becomes unplayable even if the player's Sim is male.
Life leading up to The Sims 2[]
Between The Sims and The Sims 2, a lot happened in Mortimer's life. He rose through the ranks of his career from a test subject to a mad scientist, and became very wealthy along the way, having over 500,000 simoleons to his name at the start of the game. His parents both perished in two different fires. Bella also gave birth to another child, Alexander Goth. Bella was abducted by aliens, and is still missing at the start of the game. He strongly disapproves of Cassandra being engaged to the town's Casanova, Don Lothario, though still allows them to marry, either successfully, or unsuccessfully, in his backyard.
His widow's peak hair in The Sims seems to have appeared in some photos, but he wears it differently now. It is also worth noting that his face in those storytelling images is very different, somewhat resembling that of his grandfather, Victor, suggesting that EA either changed his appearance mid-development, or that said images were taken using an earlier version of Mortimer that no longer exists.
Mortimer is retired and dating Dina Caliente, and is on his 5th day as an elder, with 7 days left before he dies of old age. He has 9 cooking points and maxed out both cleaning and logic, which are the skills needed for the Mad Scientist position. Mortimer enjoys reading, playing chess and occasionally practicing piano. Also, when viewing his Sim DNA in SimPE, he has genetics for brown hair. This is very odd considering that both other games in the series and storytelling pictures in The Sims 2 show him with black hair, implying that it was dyed black in The Sims 2. Alternatively, it could be a mistake on the developers' part.
Mortimer is known to be the shoving Sim when a Sim from another household stargazes with a telescope during the day. This is because Mortimer is the first playable Sim created in Pleasantview. If Mortimer or Cassandra stargaze with a telescope, Nina Caliente will be the shoving Sim instead, unless John Burb is moved into the neighborhood. Because Mortimer had reached level 6 of the science career, prior to his retirement, he has a Science career reward available for him to purchase.
If FreeTime expansion pack is installed, Mortimer's one true hobby will be Nature.
Life leading up to The Sims 2 (Game Boy Advance)[]
Mortimer appears with his family in The Sims 2 (Game Boy Advance). Bella has either not been abducted yet, or has reunited with her family. At the end of each episode, Mortimer rates the episode according to how many plot points have been completed.
Life leading up to The Sims 4[]
Mortimer appears in The Sims 4 alongside his wife Bella, and their children Cassandra and Alexander. Mortimer and Bella had previously appeared, in slightly different versions from the final release, in promotional materials for the game, including renders and the The Sims 4: Create A Sim Official Gameplay trailer. However, it has been officially confirmed that this version of Mortimer exists in an alternate continuity to the character who has appeared in previous games.
In the game, he lives with his family in Willow Creek, in the Ophelia Villa. He is an adult, 24 days away from becoming an elder. He works in the writer career at level 3 (freelance article writer) and has the Renaissance Sim aspiration. He has reached level 4 of the writing skill, is friends with his daughter and son, and sweethearts with his wife. He knows no one outside of his household.
In the trailer, Mortimer is shown to have three traits, which are genius, bookworm, and creative. He's also shown to have an aspiration of Renaissance Sim, and a quick learner bonus trait. In game his traits are slightly different, as genius has been replaced with outgoing, but his other two traits and aspiration remain the same. Mortimer and his family were given an official makeover shortly after the release of patch 129 of the base game.[1]
Unlike previous Sims games, there is no mention of his parents Gunther or Cornelia in The Sims 4.
Alternate versions[]
Prior to the release of The Sims 4: High School Years, The Sims released promotional images of base-game adult and young adult Sims as teens, which included Mortimer Goth. His traits are Creative and Outgoing and he has the Live Fast teen aspiration, giving him the Relatable reward trait. Mortimer and the other teen Sims can be downloaded from the Copperdale Class of '00 household from Maxis' page on the Gallery.
There is also another version of the Goths on Maxis' Gallery page, under the name New Home New Goths, with outfits from the The Sims 4: Dream Home Decorator. In the trailer for this game pack, the Goths appear in these outfits to match he home renovation they receive.

Bella's Infamous disappearance[]
The most significant event in Pleasantview's storyline is the mysterious disappearance of Mortimer's wife, Bella. All evidence points to alien abduction, but it's interesting to note that she was last seen "scaling the deck" of Don Lothario's condo. It could have been that she was looking through Don Lothario's telescope when she was taken by the aliens, however, in normal gameplay, Don doesn't have the correct telescope, initially, for triggering an alien abduction. Bella's disappearance was well-publicized, with "missing persons" notices appearing on milk cartons and in papers. This publicity has led to many theories and rumors, and even supposed sightings in Strangetown.
As of The Sims 2, she remains missing, in Pleasantview. Since Bella is gone, she and Mortimer are no longer considered to be married, and Mortimer can remarry. The story does not explicitly state how this came to be, though. It is also possible that the two divorced, prior to Bella's abduction. Mortimer is now romantically involved with Dina Caliente, unaware she is only dating him to gain access to his fortune. Oddly, Mortimer also wants to flirt with Dina's sister, Nina, when the game initially starts, for some reason. He also has a positive memory of Bella's abduction, even though it's the memory of her being abducted - which can only be obtained as a negative memory in normal gameplay - instead of the memory of her meeting aliens, the one intended for Knowledge Sims. The positivity could also be related to them divorcing, prior to the abduction. Divorcing memories do not exist, in the game, however.
Mortimer Goth in other games[]
Mortimer Goth is perhaps one of the most well known Sims in its series. He appears in other games such as The Sims: Bustin' Out, and the TV family on The Sims 2 for GameBoy Advance.
- He, his wife Bella Goth, his daughter, Cassandra Goth, the Tragic Clown and other characters are downloadable on the official SimGolf site. When the The Sims theme is chosen, there's a different Mortimer and Bella. His occupation in SimGolf is an undertaker, he speaks in a very dark and Gothic tone, much like his daughter, Cassandra, such as frequently saying the words "death" and "kill".
- Mortimer is briefly mentioned by Bella in The Sims 2 for PSP in two of her secrets, both of which claim she only married him for his money.
- This somewhat contradicts the fact that the Goth family net worth in The Sims (not considering the Goth Sr. household) is just average, and they have less money in family funds than the Bachelor family had in The Sims 3. In an interview originally posted on the (now defunct) The Sims 2 website where Bella claims that she really loves Mortimer and her family, plus the high (and mutual) relationship scores for Mortimer and Bella in all versions of The Sims further aggravates the contradiction with the PSP version of The Sims 2.
- However it's worth noting that Dina Caliente also has high and mutual relationship scores with Mortimer. Bella also has the Romance aspiration which would make her roll wants for several lovers. In addition the Goth Family are the richest family in the Base Game of the Sims 1, even if they have less money than the Bachelor family of the Sims 3.And the Goth Sr family are the richest family of the entirety of Sims 1.
- Overall it's up to player interpretation whether or not the secrets are canon.
Trivia[]
- Mortimer Goth, along with Bella Goth, Bob Newbie, Betty Newbie, Daniel Pleasant, The Grim Reaper and Agnes Crumplebottom are the only pre-made Sims to appear in all four of the main series games. Alongside that, Mortimer is the only Sim in the main series games to be playable in just the base game.
- A 2006 interview with Bella Goth posted on the now defunct TheSims2.com suggests Mortimer is the inventor of the Elixir of Life.
- In The Sims 2, it seems as if Mortimer is more than a few days older than Bella, even though in The Sims 3, they are the exact same age.[2] Bella may not have aged due to her disappearance, even though Strangetown Bella still presents her at adult age. The storyline of The Sims 2 could be implying that she married Mortimer when she was young, and he is some days older than her and very possibly around her brother's age. It is possible that Bella had access to the Elixir of Life.
- Mortimer Goth's appearance is likely based on that of Vincent Price, a famous American horror actor, or Gomez Addams(of the Addams Family).
- Furthermore, his outfit as a child (in The Sims 3) is reminiscent of the character of Pugsley Addams (of the Addams Family), whose family, like the Goths, seems to enjoy the supernatural, occult, and the macabre.
- "Mort" is French for death. Mortimer's name seems fitting because the Goths seem to be somewhat obsessed with death (as evidenced by their graveyard). The name is even more fitting in The Sims 2, in which Mortimer is closer to death.
- In The Sims 2: University, there is a Jazz song by the name "Mortimer's Touch."
- He is the only pre-made Sim to appear alive and playable in all four base games without the use of cheats or third party programs.
- In the Portuguese version of the original The Sims, it is said that he hates garlic. This is mostly likely in compliance with the instructions left for the translators in the game files ("Notes: This is the bio of Mortimer Goth. bio alludes to the Mortimer being a vampire. This reference can be changed for localization. Appears when the picture of his face is clicked on the Select a Family Screen.").
- He was the first Sim created in Pleasantview, as his NID is 1.
- His memories in The Sims 2 show him having many promotions in the science career before marrying Bella, even though in the The Sims, he is at the start of the science career track while already married with a child. This may just be a mistake by the producers that was overlooked when the game was prepared for release; or it could be an example of "retroactive continuity".
- Mortimer is one of the few pre-made playable Sims to appear on the cover of The Sims 3.
- In The Sims 3: Late Night, when a Sim is in the film career, they might get the opportunity "See Screening of Mortimer Goth and the Chalice of Water". The name of that movie is also a reference to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
- In The Sims 3, Mortimer is a few days younger than Kaylynn Langerak, but in The Sims 2, Mortimer is an elder while Kaylynn is an adult. It is possible Kaylynn had access to the Elixir of Life.
- In The Sims Medieval, there's a song on the lute called Lament for Mortimer.
- One of loveseats that The Sims 3: Pets added is Goth Family Loveseat. Its description says that it was designed by Mortimer Goth.
- If aged back down to an adult in The Sims 2, he is voiced by Stephen Kearin.
- In The Sims Bustin' Out for console, if Mortimer is hypnotized he will fall asleep only to be woken up at the player's command. The same applies to Mom Landgraab.
