Onomatology

Moonlight Bay is a pre-made neighborhood that shipped with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of The Sims 3.[1] The Wii version uses a beach town known as Vista Beach[2] and the Nintendo DS version uses a separate neighborhood known as Beacon Bay. The neighborhood's name may be a pun on Sunset Valley. Although there are many families, only six are playable (excluding the families in the family bin), and only eight out of fifteen lots in the neighborhood can be lived in. It is possible to play as the other Sims by asking them to move in or by marrying them, but they can only live in the same house as the player.

Overview[]

The map, with all rabbit holes upgraded.

Moonlight Bay is a small coastal town surrounded on three sides by mountains. Like Sunset Valley, Moonlight Bay mixes modern and futuristic building ideas with nostalgic architecture and design rooted in American suburbs of the 1950s. The town has its own school, bistro, bakery (actually a diner), library, art gallery, movie theatre and gymnasium. There are no empty lots when the game is first played. Most rabbit holes are located in the centre of town, with another commercial district in the northwest. Residential lots come in three sizes: small, medium and large. Landmarks include the beach, the waterfall and the lighthouse.

The town's rabbit holes, save for the business office, police department, abandoned warehouse, and mausoleum, are unique to the game, with all being "upgradeable" by reaching the final level of in the specific career each rabbit hole is tied to (or in the case of the school, making the honor roll). Upon being promoted or making the honor roll, the rabbit hole's shell and name will both update to another exclusive design.

The map view in the E3 2010 build of the game. Several differences are noted.

  • The town, as showcased at E3 2010, has some peculiar differences from the final product:[3]
    • Park community lots originally had more specific icons instead of the generic pond icon. Some names are different (beta -> final):
      • Street names are abbreviated (e.g. Haskins Wy. -> Haskins Way)
      • Moonlight Cove Public Beach -> Moonlight Bay Public Beach
      • Supermarket -> EverFresh Delights Grocery
    • The grass, trees, cliffs, and mountains were more simple and saturated.
    • The spa and business office lots were originally going to use the base game's Sunset Valley rabbit holes (Sharma Day Spa and Doo Peas Corporate Tower respectively), rather than the Happy Go Luxury Day Spa and the Riverview/Twinbrook office shell in the final game.
      • Strangely, in the final game, the map icons for both still resemble the beta rabbit holes, rather than the ones used.
    • There is a modern cubic lot called "Casa Del Fiesta" in place of the Landgraabs' Mediterranean Villa house.
    • There was originally a second pool lot where the Industrious Industries Research Pond is now. Interestingly, the pool can still be seen in one of the game's loading screens for said area, as shown in the gallery above.
  • A recreation of the town for PC can be found here.
