Mental is a fundamental category in The Sims 4. It has a special skill for children, and an aspiration dedicated to it. Mental skills are augmented by being focused.

Such skills are: Archaeology, Fabrication, Fishing, Gardening, Gemology, Handiness, Juice Fizzing, Logic, Programming, Research & Debate, Robotics, Rock Climbing, Rocket Science, Vampire Lore, Veterinarian, Video Gaming and Wellness. The fundamental can be gained by playing chess and video games, doing extra credit homework with a school grade of B or above, joining cooking with teen or older Sims, and using the Junior Wizard Starter Set. Other ways to build this fundamental include using a Backyard Observatory, playing a doctor set, practicing yoga on the yoga mat (along with child's Motor skill), digging for artifacts, meditating using a meditation stool, and by sleeping on the ground. If a child masters the Whiz Kid aspiration, earning the Mentally Gifted trait, this boosts their rate of learning most of the mental skills listed here for the rest of their life. Exceptions to this are Vampire Lore, Veterinarian and Rock Climbing, which are not boosted by any of the childhood aspiration rewards, and Juice Fizzing, which is boosted by the Creatively Gifted trait.
