Mysterious Mr. Gnome

‘Mysterious Mr. Gnomes, from left to right: Two usual Gnomes, The Magical Gnome of Sculpture in Stone, Abracadabra the Magical Gnome of Laundry, The Magical Gnome of Invention, Little Léon the Magical Gnome of France.
Gnomes battle chess!
The Mysterious Mr. Gnome is a special item found in The Sims 3. They are nameable, and can be stored in the inventory of a Sim. The Mysterious Mr. Gnome can be kicked, but unlike a regular garden gnome, cannot be cloned with the eyedropper tool. He has a habit of sneaking around.
The player will never see the Mysterious Mr. Gnome sneaking around, unless they are incredibly lucky. Instead, he will disappear from his current location and reappear elsewhere on the lot. He changes position at approximately 1 AM. If kicked, he falls in odd positions that are unusual for a gnome and sometimes ends up with a plaster across the bridge of his nose. When he moves, a yellow cloud will appear around him, and he will disappear.
Sometimes, the Sim will automatically walk to the new location of the Gnome. It is impossible to prevent the gnome from moving; even if walls are built around him, The Mysterious Mr. Gnome will still appear anywhere on the lot. His disappearing act usually causes him to materialize next to an object (e.g. stereo, plant, couch, washing machine). He will even interact with some objects; for example, when he appears next to TVs or stereos, he turns them on. (Possibly waking sleeping Sims, so watch out!) If The Magical Gnome Of Invention appears next to a Scraptastic™ Workbench with an unfinished project on it, he will magically make it 99% complete. A Sim at level 10 in the Science career can perform experiments on these gnomes. It is possible to have multiple gnomes in one household. This can be accomplished by using the Miner, finding them in random places and hoarding them, or by using the cheat "buydebug on" and going to Buydebug's ⛬ "Misc." tab.
Cats[TS3:P] can choose to scratch the gnomes, which will make the gnome look worn and slightly scratched, but the gnome will still do their usual antics afterwards.
Gnome family[]
This section describes features that are only available in The Sims 3: Generations.
With The Sims 3: Generations, the regular Mysterious Mr. Gnome can "get married" and have gnome children.[1] They have 5 life stages:
- Toddler (Stage length: 7 days)
- Children (Stage length: 14 days)
- Rebellious looking teen (Stage length: 14 days)
- Adult (The default look of the gnome; stage length: 18 days)
- Elder (Stage length: 13-17 days)
As such, the full life of the Gnome in Generations is 66-70 days. They are surrounded by yellow sparkles when they age up, and are not known to be affected by the Game Options' Sim Lifespan settings.
At their death, they will have a golden tombstone statue that is unique to the Gnomes, although the tombstone can alternately be bought through Buydebug.
The game does not count the 4 non-adult Mysterious Mr. Gnome ages as separate objects, making them impossible to buy in-game even with mods. NRaas Debug Enabler is however able to change the age of a gnome by clicking on a gnome → NRaas → Debug Enabler → Options: (...) → "Debug: Turn into Toddler" or "Debug: Age Up".
Only the regular Mysterious Mr. Gnome has different age stages. Graduation Gnome[TS3:UL] and Mech Gnome[TS3:ITF] are however shown with NRaas Debug Enabler to also support different age stages, but they have no differences in shapes or poses between the supposed age stages. Whether their semi-support is a leftover bug from the game's development, a bug in the gamemod, or a cut content is unknown as of April 2025.

The base game version of Mysterious Mr. Gnome looks just like a garden gnome, with an orange hat with a yellow star shaped flower on it with a brown center, a long gray beard, blue button down shirt and red pants and shoes of a brown/tan color. This unique garden gnome can be found when a Sim chooses to "Explore The Catacombs" at the graveyard, by activating the irreversible transfiguration on Carter's Display Case - XL Edition, within ore or gems when they mail them to their respective refiners, as an 'acquisition' from being promoted in the criminal career, as a reward for a case in the Investigator Profession or by fishing. It can also be found using the miner.
Mysterious Mr. Gnome is also obtainable by using testingcheatsenabled and buydebug. In "Debug" → "Misc. Objects", there should be one of every Mysterious Mr. Gnome, depending on the available expansion packs. They cost §1,000 each (§8,500 for the Mecha Gnome[TS3:ITF]).
Unless specified below, the alternate gnomes' infobox values are the same as what Mysterious Mr. Gnome has.
