The Grunt family is a military family from The Sims 2 and return in The Sims 4 available in The Sims 4 Gallery.[1] They live in Strangetown, a neighborhood that comes with the base game. General Buzz Grunt is the father of three sons named Tank, Ripp and Buck Grunt. Tank Grunt wants to be more like his father, while Ripp Grunt just wants some romance, and little Buck Grunt is just left out. His wife, Lyla Grunt, divorced him and was later electrocuted under mysterious circumstances. She is buried in the Specter family graveyard.

General Buzz and Tank have a grudge against the Curious family for being so strange, and the Smith family due to them being aliens, but Ripp and Buck have positive relationships with Johnny and Jill Smith, respectively.

The family picture to the right can give a pretty good image of the family members' personalities, and why they clash so much: Tank and Buzz are clearly domineering and tough. Ripp just seems lazy, while Buck appears to be more sensitive, thoughtful, and studious. Out of all their deceased relatives, only Lyla and Mary Melons can be resurrected.

When the family is first played, it is a Sunday morning. The game will provide a scripted notification for the player to have Tank search for a job, which is rigged to always be the millitary career:

"Young Tank really wants his father's approval. Will finding a good job and working hard finally win Tank his father's respect? Use the computer to start the job search."

Onomatology

Grunt: A low, short guttural sound made by an animal or a person. It is also an informal term for a low ranking soldier.

General Buzz Grunt: May refer to the "buzz cut" hairstyle which many military recruits receive when they enter training.

Lyla Grunt (Gen. Buzz's ex-wife): A name of Hebrew and Arabic origin meaning "night".

Tank Grunt (Gen. Buzz's oldest son): The name of an armoured fighting vehicle used in the military.

Ripp Grunt (Gen. Buzz's middle son): Shortened form of the German and Dutch name Rippert. It means "power and famous".

Buck Grunt (Gen. Buzz's youngest son): The male of various animals. Possibly a reference to the informal military term "the lowest of a particular rank". A possible reference to Buck being the youngest son.

General Chip Grunt (Gen. Buzz's father): A common short form of the names Charles and Christopher.

Missy Grunt (Gen. Buzz's mother): Could either mean a young girl or is possibly the short form of Melissa.

Mike Steel (Missy's father): The short form of Michael, from the Hebrew phrase "who is like god". Steel refers to the metal alloy steel, known for being a strong durable material.

Mary Melons (Missy's mother): Has multiple meanings, such as "beloved", "bitter" and "rebeliousness". Melons refering to the fruit melon.

General Rock Grunt (Chip's father): Possibly refering to him being like a rock. It is also a last name that is now used as a first name, refering to the topography for someone living near a rock or an oak.

Wanda Grunt (Chip's mother): A name of Polish origin possibly derived from the tribal name for the Wends, which is a historical name for Slavs living near Germanic settlement areas.

A.P. Vandermorgan (Lyla's father): A possible reference to the American businessman, Cornelius Vander Starr, who was the founder of the business C.V. Starr. Vandermorgan is most likely a last name of Dutch origin. As "Vander" is most likely a Dutch prefix meaning "of the". While, Morgan is a name of Welsh and Breton origin possibly meaning "sea chief", "sea protector", "sea defender" or "sailor/captain".

Jacqueline Vandermorgan (Lyla's father): Comes from French, as the feminine form of Jacques, which originated from Jacob a Hebrew name meaning "may God protect" or "supplanter".

Trivia

  • The military base in Lunar Lakes is named after this family, Grunt Military Base.
  • In The Sims 4, it says the household uses no material from packs, which is false. The family is still playable in the base game, but with certain aspects removed or changed, such as no members having the StrangerVille Mystery aspiration. However, some of the members still have the Home Turf trait and Lyla's death type is still poison in the base game, despite these normally being unavailable without certain packs.
