The Sims 3 The Sims 4: Eco Lifestyle

A dumpster is an object in The Sims 3 and The Sims 4: Eco Lifestyle. Sims can dumpster dive in one to retrieve valuable ― or worthless ― items based on outcome.

In The Sims 3, dumpsters were purely decorative objects until patch 50 (coinciding with the release of The Sims 3: University Life). Sims have the option to dumpster dive for cheap (but usable) furniture and collectables. This will almost completely deplete their hygiene needs, and may give them a "nauseous" moodlet, which will cause them to vomit when it expires.

If University Life is installed, dumpster diving raises a Sim's level in the Rebel social group.

Before Patch 50, dumpsters had the right lid slightly open (The post-patch version has both lids closed), and looked slightly more weary. The pre-patch dumpsters can show up in later patches under certain circumstances, most commonly in Barney's Salon and Tattoo and Grady's Junkyard, which are auto-placed when starting a new savefile in many of the game's worlds.

Cloning a pre-Patch 50 dumpster, will result in a post-Patch 50 dumpster.

A Very Fine Dumpster
A Very Fine Dumpster
You know, Dumpsters get a bad rep, don't they? Sure, they're vile and smelly. And yeah, maybe they're covered in a revolting mystery crust that makes you want to forget today ever happened.

But did you ever think that maybe, just maybe, somewhere deep within the depths of that repulsive and misunderstood receptacle awaits the new crowning jewel of your mother's sitting room? Or maybe quietly nestled below the dank funk of this repugnant vessel is the rare ingredient to your new favorite dish?

I guess what I'm trying to say here is, maybe it's time we give trash a chance. This here is A Very Fine Dumpster.

In The Sims 4: Eco Lifestyle, the dumpster can, mainly, be used to dispose of trash. Like all other outdoor garbage cans, dumpsters are considered to be "bottomless", meaning they will never need emptying. If the Reduce and Recycle lot trait is used, however, they will stop being "bottomless" and will have to be emptied by a garbage collector every week.

In addition to using it as a garbage can, Sims can dumpster dive for a variety of reasons, including for "deals" (furniture and decorations), for meals, and for "thrills" (WooHoo). Objects found in a dumpster may need to be repaired before they can be used. Sims also have the option to nap in dumpsters. Climbing into a dumpster will deplete Sims' hygiene needs, and will make them feel uncomfortable.
