Chickens are added in The Sims 4: Cottage Living. They can be purchased using the Chicken Coop object in build mode, and Sims can keep a maximum of eight chickens. When fed, they produce eggs that can be collected for use in cooking and baking. Sims can also hatch new chickens for the coop, if they have a hen and a rooster in the coop available to breed, which will offer the chance to collect hatchable eggs. They can also be fed various treats and collectibles for special effects. Here is a list of the treats and their effects:

  • Friendly Treat- Increases relationship with animal
  • Fruity treat- makes hens lay blue eggs
  • Golden Treat- turns a chicken into a golden chicken, and they will lay golden eggs
  • Flirty Treat- makes pink eggs
  • Chocolaty Treat- makes chocolate eggs
  • Healthy Treat- Increases animals lifespan
  • Fishy Protein Treat- plus one to next harvest
  • Animal Party Treat- plus one social for animal
  • Midnight Treat- makes an evil chicken, and they will lay obsidian eggs
  • Rainbow Treat- makes a hen lay rainbow eggs
  • Pumpkin Treat- makes a hen lay orange eggs
  • Veggie Treat- makes a hen lay green eggs
  • Spicy Treat- makes a hen lay obsidian eggs

Hens will lay eggs every day. One hen will lay a single egg daily, and more if you have multiple hens in your coop. However, if you purchase a rooster, they will breed with hens and hens will therefore have the ability to lay hatchable eggs. You can tell if your roosters are breeding the hens if you see small love hearts coming from the coop. When your sims go to collect the eggs from the coop, the eggs will go to that sims's inventory. If you find a hatchable egg, place it in the coop, and incubate it. Eggs will hatch after 1 day of incubation under a chicken.

Chicken do age, and will eventually die, but if you turn off aging or give them the Healthy Treat, their life can be preserved. If you no longer wish to have a chicken, you can click trade for and trade them for simoleans, meat, collectibles, or treats.

A lot with the fox lot challenge enabled will cause wild foxes to show up and try to steal eggs from coops. Foxes can be warded off by owning a llama, which will spit on them and scare them away. However, if you own The Sims 4: Cats & Dogs expansion pack, your dogs can protect your chicken coop from foxes. or you can just upgrade your coop with the fox be gone alarm.

The Sims 4: Island Living

Chickens also appear as decorative neighborhood objects in Island Living. They can be seen roaming around Sulani, and are purely decorative. They cannot be interacted with in any way.
