Cauldrons are used to craft magical potions and charge spells in The Sims: Makin' Magic, The Sims 2: Apartment Life, The Sims 3 Store, The Sims Medieval, and The Sims 4: Realm of Magic. Sims typically follow recipes written out in a spell book. The Sims 3: Supernatural combines a cauldron and a spell book into a single object known as an alchemy station.
The Sims: Makin' Magic[]
In Makin' Magic, cauldrons are used to charge spells rather than create potions. They can be purchased from buy mode, or received for free from the Mystery Man when a household first moves into a neighborhood. The amount of charges each potion makes is dependent on the Sim's Cooking Skill.

The Sims 2: Apartment Life[]
Sims automatically receive a cauldron and a spell book in their inventory when they become witches. As a result, cauldrons and spell books cannot be bought in buy mode. However, a cauldron can be sold for §870. Each cauldron is named after the Sim that owns it. For example, if Samantha Cordial owns a cauldron, it will be named "Samantha Cordial's Dangerous Cauldron". The color of the cauldron's liquid and the smoke it emits depends on the witch's magical alignment: blue for good witches, white for neutral witches and red for evil witches.
Witches can use cauldrons to craft reagents for spells, along with potions and other objects. A cauldron can also be abandoned, leaving it open to be claimed by another witch.
If a witch tries to use the cauldron belonging to a witch from a different magical alignment, they will smell the cauldron's fumes and immediately seek a glass of water from the nearest sink.

In The Sims 3: Supernatural, a cauldron forms part of the alchemy station, but it cannot be bought on its own.

The Sims 4: Realm of Magic[]
Cauldrons are a craft object in The Sims 4: Realm of Magic. Spellcasters can either work alone or in groups of up to three Sims to brew various potions, each with their own effect. Potions are brewed in batches of four, but the Copypasto spell can be used to copy potions when they run out, to avoid having to make more manually.[2] There is a branch of magic specifically devoted to making potions, called Alchemy.[3]
There are two cauldrons available for purchase. One has a normal fire underneath and the other has a magical fire. They both work on lots with the "Off-the-Grid" lot challenge.[4] Cauldrons can also be used to cook food. Depending on a Sim's cooking skill level, they can cook Mac and Cheese, Chili and Cioppino.[5] Non-spellcasters cannot brew potions, but they can use cauldrons to cook.
