Carlos is shown to have had a relationship with Chastity Gere in the lot's family stories section, though at the moment, he is being wooed by Jessica Peterson. His only living family in Belladonna Cove is Isabel Baldwin (née Contender), his niece, along with his nephew-in-law Benjamin, and his great-niece Sofia and great-nephew Marcus. Carlos is the brother of Santana.

Carlos is the social butterfly in Belladonna Cove, as he has a solid 100 reputation. If FreeTime is installed, he will have 7 points of enthusiasm in Fitness, and his predestined hobby will be Sports. His aspiration is Popularity, but by looking through his photo album and bio, it is hinted that it could have originally been Romance. In addition, he also has a hidden Romance aspiration token.

Carlos' last name, "Contender", might come from a famous book about boxing titled The Contender. It could also be a reference to the movie On the Waterfront, in which the character Terry Malloy, an ex-prizefighter, says, "You don't understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender, I could've been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am." His first name, Carlos, and his brother's name (Isabel's father), Santana, are references to Carlos Santana, a famous Mexican guitarist and leader of the band Santana.

Even though Carlos is at the top of the Athletic career, he does not have the skills required for the job. When the family is first played, his age bar will imply that he is 84 days old and that he has 26 days left to live. When it is 6:00 PM on the first day of playing his household, he will not age. According to Carlos' SimDNA in SimPE, his hair was red before it turned gray. While Carlos appears older than Santana in the family tree, and both their parents' memories state that Carlos was born first, Carlos' memories show Santana getting engaged to Magdalena before Carlos became an adult. Thus, the brothers' birth order is uncertain.
