Campfires are recreational objects shipped with The Sims: House Party, The Sims: Vacation, The Sims 2: Bon Voyage, The Sims 4: Outdoor Retreat, The Sims 4: Little Campers Kit, The Sims 4: Horse Ranch, and The Sims 4: Riviera Retreat Kit. Bonfires are much larger than campfires, and included in The Sims 2: University, The Sims 3: University Life, and The Sims 4.
The Sims 3 and some of its expansions also include fire pits, which are functionally the same as campfires.
The Sims[]
The Sims: House Party introduces a campfire, which is carried forward into The Sims: Vacation. Sims can sit around the campfire, roast marshmallows, sing campfire songs, and tell stories to other Sims. When a Sim tells a story to other Sims, a ghost named Green Beard the Ghost may come for a visit and scare the Sims around the campfire. Sims can sing three campfire songs: "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain", "Michael Row the Boat Ashore" and "On Top of Old Smoky"; although with Simlish lyrics.

The Sims 2[]
The Sims 2: University introduces a stack of wood that can be lit to start a bonfire. The Sims 2: Bon Voyage introduces a campfire similar to that in The Sims: House Party and The Sims: Vacation. Both campfires can be lit, and Sims can roast marshmallows over both fires. Sims cannot tell stories around the Bon Voyage campfire, and Sims cannot warm their hands on the University bonfire. The University bonfire can also only be lit once, and will have to be replaced after it burns out.

The Sims 3[]
Fire pit[]
Up to six dining chairs can be placed around a fire pit, though cheap ones will automatically spawn if there are none when Sims use it. Sims can poke the fire, warm themselves or roast marshmallows while sitting near it. Fire pits take up a 1x1 area of space.
List of fire pits[]
Bonfire[]
The large bonfire introduced in University Life does not need chairs, and none will spawn when Sims use it. Sims can watch or poke the fire, add wood, or throw a test tube into it (which will cause an explosion). All interactions except throwing a test tube raise a Sim's level in the Jock social group. Bonfires take up a 6x6 area of space.

Campfire[]
Campfires first return in The Sims 4: Outdoor Retreat. A campfire can have up to eight single seats and children or older can use it for various activities. Only teens and older can light up a campfire and toddlers cannot interact with them in any way, with the only exception being listening to group stories. Campfires take up a 2x2 area of space.
Lit up campfires will eventually go out on their own, but Sims can add logs every now and then to keep the fire going. Children and older can also manually extinguish it. Sims can roast five kinds of food with a campfire: marshmallows, hot dogs, veggie dogs, beetles and fish. The first three do not require anything and are available at all times, while beetles and fish require at least one of their kind within a Sim's inventory. Sims can also play with campfires and burn many amounts of Simoleons, though nearby Sims may react to it negatively. Sims who have reached level three in the guitar skill can play a guitar and sing songs around a campfire.
At a campfire, a Sim can start telling a group story of a fairy tale or an adventure, in which they can invite nearby Sims to listen. After 7 PM Sims can also tell a spooky ghost story, which may summon a ghost to the lot. Group stories can end either positively or negatively. A good story ends with the storyteller and listening Sims becoming either happy, playful, energized or inspired, while a bad story may end up in the storyteller becoming embarrassed. The player can also buy the "Great Storyteller" trait from the aspiration rewards store for 500 satisfaction points. Sims with this trait are more successful at telling bigger and better stories.

Bonfire[]
Bonfires appear in the base game (as of Patch 170), The Sims 4: Get Together, The Sims 4: Island Living, and The Sims 4: Werewolves. Only teens and older can light and extinguish a bonfire. Bonfires take up a 5x5 area of space.
Sims can hang out near the bonfire, dance, play with it, and periodically add fuel to keep the fire going. The color of the flames can be changed. If a Sim has a nearby lover on the lot, they can cozy up with them near the bonfire. Teen and older Sims have the option of performing a fire dance. Sims dancing unsuccessfully may burn themselves accidentally, getting a +1 uncomfortable “Burned arm” moodlet. The dance is more likely to be successful if the Sim is feeling confident, and nearby Sims will watch them. Certain items can also be dropped into the bonfire which will change its color such as spoiled food, toys, and drink cups and give nearby Sims a moodlet.
