Beds are objects in The Sims that increase a Sim's energy and comfort, and decreases their stress[TS3]. Both single and double beds can be found in buy mode under "Bedroom" or "Comfort". Cribs serve the same purpose for babies and toddlers in The Sims 2 and The Sims 3. In The Sims 4, newborns use a bassinet, infants use cribs, and toddlers use special toddler beds. Single beds will only fit one Sim, while a double bed can fit two, but the two Sims will only sleep together if they are in a romantic relationship, if they're siblings (children-elders) or if they're related. Kids will sleep together regardless, although they will not sleep together if one or the other is in their undies.[TS2]

Price[]

Beds come in a range of prices from cheap to expensive. In general, more expensive beds do a better job of restoring energy and comfort. Also in The Sims 3 and The Sims 4, sleeping in cheap beds will sometimes give Sims negative moodlets when they wake up.

In The Sims Life Stories, there is a §9,000 bed that is only unlocked in story rewards for Riley. This bed is called the "Fertillinator", and will increase the chance of success when trying for a baby.

Interactions[]

Sims can be directed to sleep in a bed when their energy motive is below 50%[n 1], and will autonomously sleep in one if they are very tired. Sims will autonomously choose to sleep in the bed that belongs to them,[TS2][TS3][TS4] or the nearest bed to them if no other options are available. In The Sims 2, players can choose whether Sims will sleep in their undies or in their pajamas. The Sims 3 and The Sims 4 allow Sims to nap in beds, which is similar to napping on couches and recliners. Starting with The Sims 2, Sims of all ages can experience nightmares. In The Sims 4, however, only toddlers and scared Sims can experience them.

In The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, Sims can relax on beds, and will often do so autonomously to fulfill their comfort motive. In The Sims 2, Sims can choose to daydream or read a book while relaxing on a bed, and can watch TV if one is in the same room. If the bed is a double bed, they will socialize with any Sim relaxing in the same or different beds, and is a prerequisite for romantic interactions like WooHoo.[TS2][TS3] Although the interaction does not exist in the same capacity in The Sims 4, a similar equivalent allows Sims to sit on the edge of the bed. In The Sims 2, Sims must cancel the interaction and get out of bed before they can sleep in it, unless they had WooHoo, where they will usually go to sleep immediately afterwards. In The Sims 3, Sims relaxing on a bed do not need to get out of it to go to sleep or vice versa. In The Sims 2, besides relaxing, playful Sims and children can jump on beds for fun.

In The Sims, if a sim wakes up before their energy motive is filled, they will throw a tantrum when they get out of bed. Sims with a lazy personality or sims woken before their energy motive is filled will take a while to get out of bed. Active sims will usually get out of bed faster even if their energy motive is not filled, although they will usually complain if their energy motive is not filled. If a sim sleeps in a certain single bed, they will wake up and get out of bed straight away regardless of energy motive, which is handy for children or adults that go to bed late and can give more time to fill their energy motive before waking up and going to work or school when the carpool arrives although some single beds will still result in a tantrum if they are woken up before their energy motive is filled. Double beds will always result in a sim throwing a tantrum if they wake up before their energy motive is filled.

Beds are considered to be "owned" by a Sim in The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 when they are the first Sim to sleep in it after purchase. Sims will usually autonomously choose to sleep in that bed when tired, or will often run to that bed when they witness one of their parents fighting.[TS2] Sims have sometimes been known to "forget" which bed belonged to them.[n 2] In The Sims 3: University Life, the player can manually choose which bed belongs to which Sim; this feature comes in handy with dormitories, as it will prevent other Sims from sleeping in a Sim's bed.

In The Sims 3: Supernatural and The Sims 4 with Patch 36, a bed may have a monster underneath it during nighttime. These manifest if a child finds one after checking a bed[TS3:SN] or while sleeping in one.[TS4]. Children receiving the negative moodlet will be unable to sleep in the checked bed, while in The Sims 4 the child will be awoken and unable to sleep in any until warded off; in the latter game, the child can still nap on the bed, though there is a chance that a nightmare will occur. Such instance can be countered prior by having the older Sim on the same lot promise them protection[TS3:SN], or be repelled by having the older Sim spray monster repellent, by having the bedroom equipped with a "Defender" lamp, or by having the child sleep in a double bed.[TS4] On the other hand, if the children don't find any monsters under the bed, they will get "No Monsters" moodlet, which will boost their energy need while sleeping. In The Sims 4, children can even befriend said monster.

If The Sims 3: Seasons is installed, a bed that is placed outdoors do not have a warming effect when sleeping in them, but will in fact have a cooling effect (except during summer) because the game considers the Sim to be wearing sleepwear outdoors, making it easy for them to end up with Teeth Chattering moodlet freezing during such sleep, if not worse.

Patch 91 of The Sims 4 added the ability for sims to upgrade all beds for higher energy and comfort gain.

Bed types[]

Single beds[]

Single beds are one of the two main types of beds in The Sims series. One single bed has a size of 1x3 and will only fit one Sim.

Double beds[]

Sleeping pod TS4

A double bed and a sleeping pod in The Sims 4: Get Famous.

Double beds are the second main type of bed in The Sims series. A double bed can fit two Sims, but they will only sleep together if they have a good relationship. Kids will sleep together regardless, although they will not sleep together if one or the other is in their undies.[TS2] Virtually all double beds are 2x3sq, but rare exceptions have occured.

Bunk beds[]

Generations family night

A family in a kid bedroom.

Bunk beds are a type of bed in which two single beds are stacked on top of another, allowing for the beds to occupy the floor space usually required by just one. The Sims Online was the first game overall to feature bunk beds, but The Sims 3: Generations is the first expansion in the main series to include them. Sometimes, Sims who wake up in the top bunk can be very daring and jump off. Bunk beds were added to The Sims 4 in Patch 109.

Loft beds[]

These function similarly to bunk beds, but are vacant at the bottom, allowing room for furniture or other objects. Loft beds are available in The Sims 3: Generations (as well as a few packs released afterwards) and The Sims 4.

Murphy beds[]

TS3ULBed

A Murphy bed in its full size.

Main article: Murphy bed

Murphy beds are a type of bed included in The Sims 2: Apartment Life, The Sims 3: University Life and The Sims 4: Tiny Living Stuff. They fold into the wall to save space and unlike double beds, Murphy beds take a 2x4 size, with the extra space to folds the bed.

However, unlike real-life Murphy beds, the space used by an opened bed is still considered to be in use when the bed is closed. While Sims are able to walk through that space, objects cannot be placed in that space without using the moveobjects cheat.

Special beds[]

Fertillinator[]

In The Sims Life Stories, there is a §9,000 bed that is only unlocked in story rewards for Riley. This bed is called the "Fertillinator", and will increase the chance of success when trying for a baby.

Coffins and altars[]

Late night vampire sleeping

A vampire sleeping on an altar.

Main article: Coffin

Vampires can sleep in regular beds, although they can also opt to sleep in a coffin, which will protect them from sunlight during the day and replenish their motives better, or on an altar. Coffins exist in The Sims 2: Nightlife and The Sims 4: Vampires, and altars exist in The Sims 3: Late Night and The Sims 3: Supernatural. These coffins and altars can only be used by vampires in The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, although normal Sims can choose to take a peek in a vampire coffin.

Vampires will receive the "Slept Like the Dead" moodlet from using an altar.[TS3]

The Sims 3: Generations added a hover bed as a lifetime reward for 20,000 lifetime happiness. It is a floating double bed which gives Sims a Gently Floating +10 moodlet while they sleep in it. WooHooing in the bed will give another exclusive moodlet, Meter-High Club, which gives +15 for 2 hours.

A brand new such bed can be sold for §1,500, leading to a rather poor exchange rate of LH 1 → §0.07.

The Sims 4: Get Famous introduced a sleeping pod, which can float like a hover bed. However, it functions more like a dream pod than a hover bed.

Dream pods[]

The Sims 3: Into the Future added a special type of bed, called a dream pod. Unlike other beds, a dream pod can change a Sim's life by providing a unique dream, which grants the Sim special effects when they wake up.

Fits one Sim despite being 2x3. Fills the Energy motive faster than almost any other bed in the Sims 3 era,[n 3] with a Sim on the brink of fainting getting fully rested after about 4 hours (despite the Sim being positioned in a near-sitting posture with their arms on the two armrests).

It is not listed with any Environment, Comfort, Stress Relief, or even Energy values in the Buy Mode catalog, for unknown reasons.

The available interactions are:

  • Super Sleep
  • Super Nap
  • "Select Sleepwave…", which selects one of 4 white noises to be played from the speakers behind the sleeping Sim.

It is the only known bed in the Sims 3 era to be able to break and to then need to be repaired, and can also be given the Unbreakable handiness upgrade.

It is also the only known bed (besides the charging station) where Plumbots can choose to sleep. They will however only sleep for a few minutes, but will get the Well Rested moodlet on an indefinite basis.

Spacing[]

Commonly, houses are built to have free space on the whole 1x3 areas next to beds, so Sims won't complain about being unable to go to bed. They also aren't able to slide into the other side of a doublebed if only one side has clear space.

However, in The Sims 3 and 4, only parts of the area need to be available, as shown.

Notes[]

  1. In The Sims and The Sims 2, how low a Sim's energy motive needs to be depends on the Sim's Lazy/Active score, though it will not be below 50%.
  2. There is a mod available for The Sims 2 at modthesims.info, which resolves the issue for players that had encountered it
  3. Interacting with a red or black dragon[Store] will fill Energy to full within 15min, while the Dream about Waking Up dream pod dream[TS3:ITF] can fill the energy within 15~30min by spamming the top/right good influences to get a good dream and then waking up the Sim as soon as the dream gets good.
