- For the system in The Sims 2, see Chemistry.
Attraction is a system defining the romantic attraction between two Sims introduced The Sims 4: Lovestruck. A spiritual successor to chemistry from The Sims 2: Nightlife, it functions in a similar fashion, taking into account a Sim's individual Turn-Ons and Turn-Offs, while expanding upon selectable categories. Attraction between two Sims is indicated by a magnet icon in the Relationships panel, with an upturned icon with waves indicating positive attraction, and a down-turned magnet signifying a lack of attraction.
Attraction works mainly in two parts; a Sim will first notice another Sim's physical attributes they may be attracted to, or repulsed by. As they get to know each other better, Sims mutually discover each other's traits and personality, dictating whether there is further attraction or not.
Attraction is a hidden relationship bar that is completely one-sided going from as low as -100 to a maximum of 100. Every characteristic turn-on and turn-off give -30 or 30 points, all skill and activity turn-offs and turn-ons give -20 or 20 points, while physical ones like hair color and outfit color only -10 or 10 points. As your sim gets to know one another, these points get summed up as a whole and may shift attraction in unpredictable ways.
For game-generated sims (otherwise known as townies), attraction preferences are added only when the active sim is interacting with them. Their attraction is calculated on a chance-based system. There are factors to weigh the result in a certain direction: 3 weigh points for a despisable match, 8 weigh points for a potential lover and 9 weigh points for a completely random match.
Turn-Ons and Turn-Offs overall utilize the same framework as the likes and dislikes system, and closely resemble the Social Compatibility system from The Sims 4: Growing Together. However, Social Compatibility is used for platonic and familiar relationships, whereas Attraction is used purely for romantic relationships.
Description[]
Choose your Sim's Turn-Ons and Turn-Offs. These control how romantically Attracted or Unattracted they are toward other Sims: higher levels of Attraction make Romantic Interactions easier. Romance Style Turn-Ons and Turn-Offs determine how this [sic] feels about different types of romance (such as Flirting or Gift Giving).
Effect[]
Attraction has numerous effects. Sims are more likely to do Romantic socials toward someone they are attracted to[1], and there is a chance for a Happy moodlet if Sims experience mutual attraction. Sims are much less likely to perform romantic interactions if they find the target unattractive. They may also receive an embarrassed moodlet.
Romantic Satisfaction[]
Turn-Ons and Turn-Offs play a vital role in romantic satisfaction, notably the romantic styles category. When Sims spend time in a relationship they can raise their romantic satisfaction by having their romantic interaction needs filled, Sims have individual satisfaction and when one Sim's satisfaction isn't being met or has decayed too much, they will start wanting to seek romantic consulting, or will want to break up with their partner.
Upkeeping the romantic satisfaction of both partners is important for a healthy and long term relationship. Knowledge, just like attraction, is a one way street and unless the player has the partner in the same household; they will not be able to see how satisfied they are in a relationship. And thus the Sim must find out attraction by asking them under the learn more selection of interactions under the Relationships social category.
Romantic Satisfaction will decay over time, if no actions are taken at all. It takes about 10 and a half in-game days for Satisfaction to drop from maximum to minimum, making it somewhat difficult to lower over time unless sims don't live in the same household and are too busy to see each other regularly. Traits like Lovebug increase the Romantic Satisfaction decay by 15%, the Romantically Reserved trait slows the decay by 15% and Affection Aficionado slows the decay by 99.3%.
Levels of Satisfaction[]
There are five levels of satisfaction Sims can feel within a relationship:
Very Satisfied - When both Sims in a relationship are very satisfied, their romantic relationship will increase overtime for as long as they are satisfied.
Satisfied - Sims satisfied in a relationship will benefit from happy moodlets.
Fine
Unsatisfied - Sims unsatisfied in a relationship will suffer from sad moodlets.
Very Unsatisfied - When very unsatisfied, an autonomous breakup of the relationship triggers after four repeated offenses (cheating, being mean, breaking romantic boundaries). Romantic relationship will decrease overtime in this state.

Way of Life[]
A Sim's way of life can affect their attractiveness to this Sim. Skills, career, or even their wealth can all play a factor.
A Way of Life is a way to describe various details of a Sim's life, ranging from skills, career levels, marital status, to net worth. Attraction to this category only comes into play once Sims discover more about each other.
For instance, Sims attracted to Academic Sims will find themselves more attracted to a Sim upon learning that they have skills such as Logic, Research and Debate, or Vampire Lore.

Characteristics[]
Sim Characteristic preferences will determine what types of personalities this Sim will be attracted to.
Sim Characteristics return from The Sims 4: Growing Together, and are almost identical to the categories used by the Social Compatibility system, instead being used for romantic criteria. A key difference is that Characteristics in this context have no negative score modifiers. With Social Compatibility, a Sim who likes Ambitionless Sims for instance will have negative compatibility with Ambitious Sims.
Meanwhile, a Sim who is Turned On by Ambitionless Sims in the romantic context, won't be Turned Off by Ambitious Sims. Instead, an Ambitious Characteristic is introduced, which is up to the player to decide whether or not their Sim will be romantically attracted to.
Like Ways of Life, Characteristic preferences only come into play once two Sims discover more about each other's Traits, Likes, and Lifestyles.

Romance Styles[]
Romance Styles Turn-Ons and Turn-Offs determine how a Sim feels about various expressions of romance in their relationships with other Sims.
Sims with a Turn-On for a given Romance Style will gain extra Romantic Satisfaction from performing these types of interactions. Likewise, Sims with a Turn-Off for a given style will lose Romantic Satisfaction from these types of interactions.
Romance Styles are ways your Sim expresses their love. While one Sim may enjoy being showered in gifts, another may despise it.
